Merlot

Known as Cabernet Sauvignon’s partner in crime, Merlot is a soft, fleshy and easy to grow grape that ripens easily, which makes it one of the world’s most planted wine grapes. This plummy little chum makes a lovely blend with said partner-in-crime, softening the tannic structure of Cabernet Sauvignon, while adding fruit and flesh to the mix.

Climate has a lot to say about the taste of Merlot. When the climate is hotter as in California, expect a more fruit-forward and soft Merlot, in contrast to the herbaceous and mineral character of cool-climate Merlots from Bordeaux.

Merlot has had quite a journey in terms of popularity and demand, and if you haven’t heard already, the movie Sideways is partly to blame, where Paul Giamatti’s character declared: I’m not drinking any f….. Merlot. The cultural impact was pretty hefty and the following year, sales of Merlot decreased by 2 percent and Pinot Noirs increased by 16 percent.

This is known as the Sideways Effect and although Merlot’s reputation suffered significantly, people have come around and enjoy its ability to make stunning and easy-drinking wines.
