Regions

It is divided into 20 administrative regions spanning its geography. Regions may be known for their own style or its unique grapes.

Here are some of the major wine regions -

Alsace

Barossa Valley

The Barossa Valley is a renowned wine-producing region northeast of Adelaide, in South Australia. The area encompasses towns such as Tanunda, Angaston and Nuriootpa, and an array of high-profile wineries offering tours and cellar-door tastings.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux Saint-Emillon

Saint-Emilion is a charming medieval village located in the heart of the famous Bordeaux wine area. It is a very unique site were world-famous wineries, fine wine, beautiful architecture and great monuments are a perfect match. The legend tells us about a monk from Brittany who fled from Vannes, his hometown, to seek refuge in one of the natural caves in a place called Ascum bas (former name of the village) in the 8th century.

Bordeaux, Haut-Medoc

Bordeaux, Haut-Médoc is the large southern section of the greater Médoc district of Bordeaux in southwestern France. It accounts for two-thirds of the Médoc peninsula. The appellation of the same name covers red wines produced within the same zone, but outside of the six communes which have their own AOP.

Bordeaux, Margaux Margaux is the smallest of the four Médoc villages, with a little less than 2.9 square miles of area. The population, however, is over 1,300, perhaps due to the large number of wineries and winemakers that are located there.

Bordeaux, Pauillac

Bordeaux, Pauillac, a commune located between Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Julien on Bordeaux's Médoc peninsula, is home to some of the world's most famous and expensive red wines wines, made predominantly from the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety. The commune gives its name to the Pauillac appellation d'origine contrôlée.

Because Saint-Estèphe is marginally further from the gravel-bearing waters of the Garonne river, the soil here is far less stony than that found in the southern part of Haut-Médoc. Instead, a heavy clay and limestone base dominates this area, resulting in poorer-draining soils, delayed ripening, and higher acidity levels in the wines.

Napa Valley is a renowned Californian wine-producing region north of San Francisco, with hundreds of vineyards set amid rolling hills. Its wineries range from small, family-run estates to landmarks such as Robert Mondavi Situated immediately north of San Pablo Bay, the valley runs roughly SE – NW for approximately 35 miles (60km) between the Vacas and Mayacamas mountain ranges (to the east and west respectively). The scenic 40-minute drive between the Napa and Calistoga townships passes through some of the most valuable viticultural real estate on Earth.

The area was one of the first in Chile to be recognised as having a distinct terroir for the production of wine. This is of particular note in a country that is historically better known for high production than for high quality.

EU law and the laws of most countries reserve the term "champagne" exclusively for wines that come from this region located about 160 kilometres (100 miles) east of Paris.

Eden Valley

The Eden Valley Wine region shares a boundary with its more famous neighbour the Barossa Valley, and there is considerable overlap in the operations of the two regions. Many wineries in each of these regions have vineyards, or source grapes from, the other. But these regions themselves are quite distinct in topography, altitude, temperature and therefore viticultural potential.

McLaren Vale

The McLaren Vale wine region, in the north-west of Fleurieu Peninsula, is located approximately 35 kilometers (22 miles) south of Adelaide. It is by far the most important wine-producing area in the Fleurieu zone and is also regarded very highly throughout Australia and the world.

The northern vineyards of the appellation are intermingled with the southern fringes of Bordeaux city. Those in the south are surrounded by the forests which produce the other main export of Graves: timber. Orchards and fields dominate the landscape of the Entre-Deux-Mers region just across the Garonne river, but pine forests and housing are predominant in Pessac-Léognan.

Piedmont

Piedmont (‘at the foot of the mountain’) is a very high-quality wine region in the northwest of Italy with Turin (Torino) as the main city. Mountains protect the region from every side, except from the east, where the Po River runs. Although Piedmont is at the same latitude as Bordeaux, it has a continental climate, with cold winters, because it is far from the moderating influence of the sea.

As a wine region, Veneto brings heft and history to the table. Its importance is in part due to the volume of Pinot Grigio it produces, and the massive growth in demand for Prosecco. However, continued recognition for other wines from the region, such as Valpolicella, Amarone, Soave and Bardolino help keep Veneto in the spotlight.
